There are a large number of ASTM Standards that contain information regarding the avoidance of alkali-aggregate reactivity (AAR) in concrete. There was a push by industry and within ASTM, including the Executive committees of both C01 and C09, to synchronize these documents into one guidance document that provided information on 1) interpretation of ASTM test methods for alkali-aggregate reactivity and 2) guidance on avoiding such deleterious reaction. Over the past years this effort has been undertaken by Subcommittee C09.50 Risk Management for Alkali-Aggregate Reactions and has resulted in a new guidance document, ASTM C1778-14 Standard Guide for Reducing the Risk of Deleterious Alkali-Aggregate Reaction in Concrete. Now that this guidance document has been published, the goal, as directed by the Executive committees of both C01 and C09, is to remove all references to C227 and C289, to remove interpretation of results and to remove all guidance related to the evaluation and mitigation of alkali-silica reaction.
