New Practice for Calibration and Usage of Germanium Detectors in Radiation Metrology for Reactor Dosimetry

1. Scope

1.1 This standard establishes techniques for calibration, usage, and performance testing of germanium detectors for the measurement of gamma-ray emission rates of radionuclides in radiation metrology for reactor dosimetry. The practice is applicable only to samples of small size, approximating to point sources. It covers the energy and full-energy peak efficiency calibration as well as the determination of gamma-ray energies in the 0.06 to 2-MeV energy region and is designed to yield gamma-ray emission rates with an uncertainty of ±3?% (see Note 1). This technique applies to measurements that do not involve overlapping peaks, and in which peak-to-continuum considerations are not important.

Rationale

This practice is one product of a reorganization of E181-17: Standard Test Methods for Detector Calibration and Analysis of Radionuclides. Structural and technical changes are sought in order to keep the standard current with industry methods and practices. E181 combines several marginally related topics making it difficult to maintain.
Although it is so named, E181 does not meet current ASTM requirements for a new test method. This effort will address calibration and usage of Germanium detectors in reactor metrology in a form most appropriate for a practice. Additional standards will address other topics discussed in E181. The original document E181 will be reformatted as a guide and function as a matrix document to maintain links with the standards referencing the existing version of E181 with the newly developed standards. Further information, as well as updates to the process, can be found in the discussion section.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
