New Practice for Shape Analysis of Proppant Materials by Direct Imaging

1. Scope

Document will instruct a general method for how to assess proppant shapes using digital imaging analyzers with reference to the shape requirements as detailed in API RP19C

Keywords

particle shape, proppant, API RP 19C

Rationale

The assessment of particle shape is currently an objective method whereby the operator selects 20 particles at random from the sample material and visually compares them to a chart of shapes (Krombein-Sloss chart). The use of imaging technology will enable each particle measured to have a shape factor assigned to it based on the software categorizing each particle according to the Krombein-Sloss chart which will be read into the software and used for comparison on a particle by particle basis.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
